As call volume continue to rise for departments like ours, we're always looking for ways to prevent emergencies. Historically, the fire service has focused on fire prevention -- now, we're looking closer at the medical side.
Last week, Firefighter/Paramedic Becky Rosebrock rode along with the HERO program. The Health Education, Resources, and Outreach program is a voluntary, non-emergency program that is open to all communities served by Springfield Twp Fire Department and Sylvania Fire-EMS. The program addresses issues such as frequent falls, medical education, assistance for chronic medical diagnoses, access to resources, installation of grab bars and other mobility aids, and advocation to ensure the resident can obtain the needed resources while remaining independent at home.
As reported by Mature Living News, "In just a few short years, the [program] reduced the number of repeat emergency calls for falls by approximately 80%."
FF/P Rosebrock is developing a report to determine if a program similar to HERO would be effective in Lake Township. This report will include alternative funding options that exist for this up-and-coming focus of the fire service.
Thank you to Jodi Livecchi, Lt. Shawn Wittkop, Chief Michael Ramm, and Chief Barry Cousino for providing this opportunity.
